The DEWATRA Training School, titled “Introduction to Decarbonization in Waterborne Transportation”, was successfully held from 8 to 10 October 2025 at the Congress Centre of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon University.

Organised within the framework of the COST Action CA23159 – DEWATRA (Decarbonising Waterborne Transportation), the three-day event brought together researchers, professionals, and students from across Europe to explore the latest advances, strategies, and challenges in achieving low-emission and sustainable waterborne transport.

Delivered in a hybrid format, the Training School welcomed both on-site participants in Lisbon and online attendees from partner institutions, promoting broad knowledge exchange and engagement across the maritime research community. A total of 70 participants registered to take part in the sessions, reflecting the growing interest in maritime decarbonization and the Action’s relevance across Europe.

Highlights and Programme Overview

The sessions featured expert-led lectures by distinguished academics and industry specialists from leading institutions, including Instituto Superior Técnico, Istanbul Technical University, University of Strathclyde, University College London, and the University of Rijeka.

Over the three days, participants explored a wide range of topics, such as:

  • Strategies for decarbonization of waterborne transport
  • Regulatory developments for hydrogen and ammonia as marine fuels
  • Ship energy efficiency through lightweight structures and waste heat recovery
  • Advanced combustion concepts and dual-fuel systems
  • Marine carbon capture and storage
  • Wind-assisted propulsion and intelligent energy management for hybrid systems

In addition to lectures, the event provided valuable opportunities for networking, knowledge transfer, and discussion of emerging research trends in line with the EU’s zero-emission transport goals.

Acknowledgements

The organisers express their appreciation to all trainers, speakers, and participants for their active contribution to the success of this event. Special thanks go to Professor C. Guedes Soares and the Instituto Superior Técnico team for hosting and supporting the Training School.

The DEWATRA Training School was supported by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) under grant CA23159.
