The DEWATRA Short Training Course on Maritime Decarbonisation began on 5 October 2026 at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Türkiye. Held in a hybrid format, the five-day course brings together participants on site and online to explore approaches to cleaner, safer and more energy-efficient waterborne transportation.
The programme opened with a welcome address by Prof. C. Guedes Soares, followed by his keynote lecture on strategies for decarbonising waterborne transportation. He also presented approaches to modelling traffic and associated emissions using Automatic Identification System (AIS) data.

Prof. Selma Ergin addressed the assessment of air emissions from ships, with particular emphasis on ports, highlighting an important dimension of the maritime sector’s environmental impact.

The afternoon sessions focused on ship performance and energy-saving technologies. Dr. George Dafermos presented lectures on propeller performance in waves and hydrodynamic energy-saving devices.

Dr. Andro Bakica concluded the day with a lecture connecting the operating principles of energy-saving devices with regulatory compliance.

Together, the opening day’s lectures provided a foundation for the week ahead, linking the broader goals of maritime decarbonisation with the methods and technologies supporting their implementation.
DEWATRA extends its appreciation to the speakers for sharing their expertise, to participants joining on site and online, and to the ITU hosts for their organisation and hospitality.
The training course continues until 9 October 2026, covering two complementary modules: Improving Performance in Waterborne Transportation and Alternative-Fuel Propulsion Systems.
The course is organised within the framework of DEWATRA COST Action CA23159 – Decarbonising Waterborne Transportation.
