DEWATRA Short Training Course on Maritime Decarbonisation to Take Place in Istanbul

5–9 October 2026 | Istanbul Technical University, Türkiye

The DEWATRA Short Training Course will take place from 5 to 9 October 2026 at Istanbul Technical University, bringing together researchers, academics and maritime professionals for five days of lectures on ship performance, sustainable propulsion and the decarbonisation of waterborne transport.

Hosted at the Süleyman Demirel Cultural Centre, Ayazağa Campus, the course will be organised around two complementary modules:

  • Improving Performance in Waterborne Transportation
  • Alternative-Fuel Propulsion Systems

The first module will examine strategies for reducing the environmental impact of waterborne transport. Topics will include ship and port emissions, AIS-based traffic and emissions modelling, propeller performance, hydrodynamic energy-saving devices, drag-reduction technologies, onboard carbon capture, wind-assisted propulsion and the use of solar energy in maritime transport.

The second module will focus on the technologies, assessment methods and regulatory considerations supporting the transition to alternative marine fuels and propulsion systems. Lectures will address:

  • Electrical, hybrid and alternative-fuel propulsion
  • IMO regulations and FuelEU Maritime
  • Life-cycle environmental and cost assessment
  • Biodiesel and low-temperature combustion
  • Safe integration of alternative-fuel systems onboard ships
  • Fuel cells, batteries and hybrid energy systems
  • Continuous ship-performance monitoring
  • Nuclear propulsion for maritime decarbonisation

The programme will open with a keynote lecture by Prof. C. Guedes Soares on strategies for the decarbonisation of waterborne transportation. Further lectures will be delivered by experts from across Europe, offering participants multidisciplinary perspectives on the technical, environmental, economic, safety and regulatory aspects of maritime decarbonisation.
